Don’t Wait It Out: 5 Signs You Need Urgent Dental Care

Patient wincing because of a dental emergency

Not every tooth trouble is a dental emergency—but some absolutely are! Knowing the difference can save your teeth, reduce pain, and prevent bigger problems down the line. If you’re wondering whether to call the dentist now or wait it out, this guide can help. Continue reading to find five signs that it’s time to get urgent dental care from a dentist near you.

1. Severe or Persistent Tooth Pain

Mild discomfort may go away with time, but sharp, throbbing, or constant pain is a red flag. This could be a sign of deep decay, infection, or abscess. Waiting for it to disappear on its own will generally only make things worse.

2. Swelling in Your Face or Jaw

Facial swelling, especially when paired with pain or fever, can be a sign of a spreading infection. These issues can become serious quickly, sometimes affecting your overall health. If you feel short of breath, faint, or like your throat is closing, head to the nearest emergency room instead of going to your dentist’s office.

3. Knocked-Out or Loose Tooth

A knocked-out adult tooth is a true dental emergency. As soon as the tooth is dislodged, the timer starts. You’ll need to get to your dentist within 30 to 60 minutes for the best chance of saving it. Handle the tooth gently, avoid touching the root, and keep it moist with milk, saliva, or a tooth-saver kit.

4. Cracked, Broken, or Chipped Tooth

Small chips aren’t always urgent, but large cracks or breakage, especially if they expose the tooth’s inner layers, need immediate care. Delaying treatment could mean pain, infection, or losing your tooth entirely.

5. Bleeding That Won’t Stop

A little bleeding after flossing isn’t an immediate threat (though it is an early sign of gum disease). But if you have an injury causing bleeding from your gums, tongue, or inner cheek that doesn’t stop within 10 minutes, you’ll need to get help immediately. However, instead of seeing your dentist, go to the nearest ER.

Delaying dental care can turn a manageable issue into something more painful, expensive, and serious. If you’re unsure whether your symptoms qualify as urgent, give your dentist a call. It’s always better to ask than to risk your smile or your health!
